The race left the start in Monza headed for the a big loop around the roads of Lombardia.

A hard pace on the Madonna del Ghisallo, 98 kms into the race, saw the peloton begin to struggle. A 2 rider breakaway escaped on the long climb of the Valpiana. Zenon Jascula and defending Lombardia champion Pascal Richard rode well together but with 80 km to go their lead was only 28 seconds on an elite 9 rider chase group.

Through the City of Airuno Richard dropped Jacula. Richard's GB-MG teammate Davide Cassani and Dmitri Konyshev (Jolly Componibili) were controlling the chase group and protecting the breakaway's time gap. Claudio Chiappucci (Carrera) attacked the climb of the Colle Brianza and stretched the now 10 rider group. Descending into the finish in Monza Chiappucci and Vladislav Bobrik (Gewiss-Ballan) were away and closing on the leader.

When the race returned to Monza Richard still held a dwindling lead. In site of the finish line Richard was caught. Quickly Bobrik launched his sprint and easily passed Richard and Chiappucci.

Russian Vladislav Bobrik (Gewiss-Ballan) captured the biggest victory of his career.
